Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the Adipur-Bhuj section, a 49 km stretch on Western Railway, at a cost of Rs 4,930 million (Rs 4,930 million). The project has been sanctioned under the Indian Railways' programme for capacity augmentation through doubling and other network enhancement works. The scheme aims to strengthen rail connectivity in the Kutch region and to cater for growing passenger and freight requirements.

The Adipur-Bhuj section is presently a single-line route on the Gandhidham–Naliya corridor and lies amid several ongoing projects, including the Bhuj-Naliya gauge conversion, the Naliya-Vayor extension and new links connecting Naliya-Jakhau, Vayor-Lakhpat and Deshalpar-Luna. Completion of these works is expected to channel significant additional traffic through this section, and has informed the decision to proceed with doubling. The doubled line will improve operational flexibility and reduce bottlenecks on the corridor.

Operationally, the project will enable two additional passenger train services in each direction every day, enhancing travel convenience and connectivity across the region. It will also support the movement of an additional 12 million tonnes per annum (12 mn t per annum) of freight, thereby strengthening logistics and industrial links in western Gujarat. The enhancement is intended to facilitate smoother scheduling and to accommodate future traffic growth.

Current line capacity utilisation is projected to rise to 123 per cent by 2029-30, underlining the urgency of capacity augmentation. The doubling work is expected to decongest the route, to reduce operational constraints and to improve the reliability of train operations. Indian Railways anticipates additional revenue from increased passenger and freight movement while supporting economic development in the Kutch region.

The sanction reflects Indian Railways' ongoing commitment to modernise the national rail network and to make it future-ready by addressing capacity constraints and improving freight corridors. Work will be coordinated by Western Railway and will integrate with wider network improvements in the Kutch area to deliver more reliable services for industry and communities.
