The Central Government has approved railway modernisation projects worth Rs 8,710 million (Rs 871 crore) for Kerala, Bengal and Rajasthan, signalling an investment in regional upkeep and operations. The approvals form part of a broader plan to strengthen maintenance infrastructure across the national network and aim to reduce service disruptions caused by ageing facilities. The sanctioned works cover coach depots and related infrastructure upgrades that are intended to improve reliability and availability of rolling stock.

In Rajasthan, the significant elements of the package include major coach maintenance facility upgrades at Sri Ganganagar and enhancements at Lalgarh coach depot. The Sri Ganganagar maintenance facility will be developed at a cost of Rs 1,742.6 million (Rs 174.26 crore), which will expand the capacity for overhauls and scheduled maintenance of long distance rakes. The measures are expected to modernise workshop utilities and introduce processes that align with contemporary maintenance standards.

At Lalgarh, the approved works will provide a new washing line, a covered shed, a dedicated service building and an automatic coach washing plant that together will streamline routine servicing tasks. These interventions are designed to reduce turnaround times for coaches and to improve the cleanliness and readiness of rakes for service. Upgraded facilities are projected to support higher throughput of maintenance activities without compromising safety or technical compliance.

Officials indicated that the overall investment will enhance operational efficiency and increase the possibility of introducing new train services by ensuring that rolling stock is maintained to required standards. The package for Kerala and Bengal will likewise target depot and workshop capacity, although detailed allocations for those states were not provided in the release. The approvals underscore a continuing focus on infrastructure modernisation to support reliable passenger and freight operations across regions.
