Indian Railways Approves Rs 2,010 Million Kavach For Ambala Division

Indian Railways has approved the installation of Kavach on the remaining broad gauge sections of the Ambala Division of Northern Railway.

The project covers 811 route kilometres and has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 2,010 million.

The sanctioned work will cover important rail routes in the Ambala Division, including Ambala Cantonment–Ludhiana, Kalka–Chandigarh–New Morinda–Sahnewal, Sirhind–Daulatpur Chowk, Rajpura–Bathinda–Shri Ganganagar and Ludhiana–Dhuri–Jakhal sections.

These corridors serve as key links connecting the states of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and handle substantial passenger and freight traffic that supports the movement of people and goods across the region.

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system designed to enhance operational safety by preventing signal passing at danger, applying brakes automatically to avert unsafe situations and controlling train speed in critical conditions.

Indian Railways is progressively expanding Kavach across its network as part of efforts to improve safety, reliability and capacity on strategically important routes.

The Ambala Division installation is part of a broader rollout that uses LTE based communication to support train to train and train to trackside communication.

The Rs 2,010 mn sanction will strengthen safety margins on the referenced 811 route kilometres and contribute to modernisation of operations.

The deployment will involve installation of on board units and trackside equipment along the covered sections and integration with the signalling and traffic control systems.

This measure is intended to enhance operational discipline and reduce human error while enabling denser and more reliable train operations.

Officials view the sanction as a significant stride in modernising safety systems on Indian Railways.
