Indian Railways is preparing to develop Mega Coaching Terminals in 20 major cities to ease congestion and significantly expand train-handling capacity. Key hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad have been identified for the programme, given their high volume of originating and terminating trains.
In Ahmedabad’s Vatva area, one terminal is already under construction. With about 45 trains currently originating from the city, the new facility is expected to handle nearly 150 services once fully operational. A dedicated terminal is also planned for Surat to support rising demand on the busy corridor.
The initiative forms part of a wider push to modernise passenger rail operations, streamline seasonal traffic and improve station infrastructure across India.
