Johnson Controls–Hitachi and Elsewedy Machinery to Deliver Egypt’s Largest VRF System for National High-Speed Rail

Johnson Controls–Hitachi Air Conditioning Middle East and Africa (Johnson Controls–Hitachi Air Conditioning MEA), in collaboration with Elsewedy Machinery, has secured a landmark HVAC contract for Egypt’s transformative High-Speed Rail (HSR) project. The initiative marks a major milestone in the nation’s infrastructure landscape, connecting key cities and ports through a 660-km corridor, and setting new benchmarks in sustainable mobility.

An official signing ceremony, attended by senior leadership from both Johnson Controls–Hitachi and Elsewedy Machinery, underscored the partners’ commitment to Egypt’s modernisation goals and sustainable development agenda.

The expansive HSR line will connect Ain Sokhna, Alamein, Cairo, Alexandria, 6th of October City, and other critical urban nodes. Once operational, the line will facilitate daily movement for over 1 million passengers and approximately 8,500 tonnes of cargo, dramatically improving travel times and logistics efficiency nationwide.

Under the contract, Hitachi will supply more than 3,000 high-efficiency indoor VRF units, produced at its Barcelona, Spain manufacturing facility. These systems collectively offer a cooling capacity exceeding 11,000 Refrigeration Tons (RT), and are Eurovent-certified for performance. Engineered for high-ambient operation, the units are tailored to Egypt’s climate conditions and rigorous transport sector requirements.

“This mega project represents a pivotal advancement in Egypt’s national infrastructure agenda. It reflects the country’s vision for modern, efficient, and climate-conscious transportation,” said Ahmed Aqel, General Manager, Johnson Controls–Hitachi Air Conditioning MEA. “We are proud to deliver our advanced HVAC systems to a development of this scale and significance, working alongside Elsewedy Machinery to ensure technical precision, operational excellence, and long-term impact.”

Elsewedy Machinery, the trading arm of Elsewedy Electric Group, will execute the complete HVAC scope — encompassing supply, installation, copper piping, start-up, commissioning, and after-sales support.

“Our partnership with Elsewedy Electric brings together global HVAC innovation and local execution expertise,” added Aqel. “By integrating high-performance European-manufactured VRF systems into Egypt’s high-speed rail infrastructure, we are supporting a new benchmark in sustainable, large-scale transport solutions.”

The project is emblematic of Egypt’s vision for long-term, sustainable economic development and regional connectivity. It is expected to yield lasting social and economic impact by enabling faster mobility, boosting logistics, and enhancing infrastructure resilience across the country.
