The Kochi Metro Rail Limited has taken up widening and upgradation of the approach roads to the water metro terminals serving the Kadamakkudy island cluster. The move responds to long standing concerns about dilapidated and narrow stretches that would hamper seamless connectivity and impair effective utilisation of the new services, the Kadamakkudy panchayat president M S Antony said. The project follows a formal request from the panchayat and forms part of broader interventions planned alongside the water metro.

KMRL will widen and strengthen the one point four-km stretch from Kadamakkudy temple to Murikkal where the terminal is located and will renovate the stretch from St Francis Church in Pizhala to the Paliyamthuruth station. Work will also include shoreline protection measures and the installation of streetlights at selected locations to improve safety and accessibility. The works will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to residents and existing traffic.

Officials said the Kadamakkudy and Paliyamthuruth terminals are expected to be operational by June. The works were originally scheduled for completion by March 2026 but the timeline has been pushed to June owing to several crucial components, including floating pontoons, remaining unfinished. KMRL is coordinating with local authorities to fast track procurement and installation of remaining items.

Additional terminals planned across neighbouring islands include facilities at Mulavukad, Ponnarimangalam, Chennur, Kothad, Pizhala, Thundathumkadavu, Chariyamthuruth, Elamkunnapuzha and Moolampilly. The rollout of these stations is expected to strengthen connectivity across the island cluster and to unlock new tourism potential, the panchayat president added. Stakeholders said improved access could support local commerce and daily commutes. Local leaders have welcomed the integrated infrastructure approach as a step towards sustainable mobility for island residents.
