The Kanpur Metro project has achieved a key construction milestone with the successful installation of the Third Rail power system on the 5.3 km-long Baradevi–Naubasta elevated section of Corridor 1, which runs from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta.

This stretch forms part of the remaining balance section between Kanpur Central and Naubasta. Trains on the Kanpur Metro network operate using a 750-volt DC Third Rail system, and the installation was carried out alongside track laying to avoid delays to the overall project schedule.

Track construction on the elevated section was completed by the end of October 2025, following which Third Rail installation works were taken up and have now been fully completed. In addition to the physical installation, all mandatory safety checks, technical tests and inspection procedures related to the power system have been successfully carried out.

The section has also received the necessary approvals from the Electrical Inspector General, clearing an important regulatory requirement ahead of further trial runs and operational readiness.

Providing an update on other parts of the project, Sushil Kumar, managing director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited, said that track construction in the underground section between Kanpur Central and the Swadeshi Cotton Mill ramp is progressing at a rapid pace. He added that construction work on Corridors 1 and 2 is expected to continue steadily.

The completion of Third Rail works on the Baradevi–Naubasta stretch marks another step forward in expanding Kanpur’s metro network and improving urban mobility in the city.
