Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) has achieved a key construction milestone on its Palarivattom–Kakkanad Metro extension, with the installation of the first girder for the viaduct section marking visible progress on the city’s upcoming Pink Line.
A 170-tonne U-shaped girder was successfully launched between pillars 284 and 285 along the Infopark Expressway in Kakkanad. Fabricated at KMRL’s casting yard in Kalamassery, the girder was transported on a multi-axle trailer and positioned with the help of a heavy-duty crane.
According to KMRL, girder placement will continue over the next few days as part of ongoing works along the Infopark stretch. Construction activity has gathered pace, with 65 pillars completed near the proposed SEZ, Alinchuvadu, and Vazhakkala stations. Pier caps have been installed on 18 of these.
In total, 1,135 piles—875 for the main line and 260 for station buildings—have been completed. The Kalamassery casting yard has produced 100 U-girders, 72 I-girders, and 100 pier caps, while fabrication of remaining components is underway.
Tendering for track construction is currently in progress, even as viaduct works advance steadily.
Spanning 11 km from JLN Stadium to Infopark, the Pink Line will significantly enhance connectivity between Kochi’s core city areas and its growing IT corridor in Kakkanad. The Rs 19.57 billion project, awarded to Afcons Infrastructure, is targeted for completion within 20 months.
