Kochi’s Water Metro Expands, Mattancherry Terminal to Launch in April
Key Highlights: Eco-Friendly Expansion: The Water Metro, India’s first electric-hybrid ferry network, integrates seamlessly with metro and bus routes.
New Terminal Capacity: Berths for three ferries at a time. Overnight berthing facilities for additional ferries.
Route Extensions:
High Court–Mattancherry corridor to be operational soon. Planned extension to Willingdon Island, a crucial maritime hub.
Fleet & Infrastructure Enhancements: Four ferries, including a new Cochin Shipyard vessel, will operate on the High Court-Mattancherry route. Floating pontoons are being installed to ensure safe berthing at all water depths. 100-seater catamaran to improve night services to Mattancherry, backed by the State Water Transport Department (SWTD).
Seamless Urban Integration: Electric Feeder Buses: Three circular routes connect the High Court terminal to key areas:
MG Road Maharaja’s College Ground General Hospital Runs every 10 minutes, 7:45 AM – 8 PM; fare: Rs 20.
Commuter Concerns & Safety Measures: Passenger groups have raised concerns over dimly lit jetty areas, urging the Chief Minister and Electricity Minister for immediate lighting improvements.
