Kolkata metro?s green initiative involves replacing traditional steel third rails with modern aluminum, expected to cut 50,000 tons of carbon emissions over its lifetime, significantly contributing to Kolkata?s environmental goals. This initiative, starting at Noapara in Baranagar on June 13, aims to boost operational efficiency and reduce energy consumption of metro trains by leveraging aluminum?s superior electrical conductivity, minimising system voltage drops and energy losses.
Kolkata Metro seeks to align with global standards seen in cities like Singapore and London, aiming to enhance energy efficiency, operational performance, and air quality inside tunnels without requiring welding for maintenance.
