Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to ensure that all metro rail projects in the state are completed within three years from the start of construction as the government accelerates expansion of its urban rapid transit network. He chaired the state cabinet's Infrastructure Committee to review progress across Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The move is intended to strengthen safe, fast and environment-friendly public transport.

The state has 174 km of operational metro corridors, while 291 km are under construction. Another 130 km of routes are awaiting approval and detailed project reports are being prepared for 87.15 km of additional corridors. The government plans to operationalise more than 300 km of new metro lines by 2029-30, taking the total network to 683.53 km.

Metro projects worth Rs 2.81 trillion (tn) are at various stages of implementation. The Centre's share is Rs 272.16 billion (bn) and the Maharashtra government's direct contribution is Rs 502.5 bn. A further Rs 757.3 bn will be mobilised through the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and local planning agencies, with the balance to be raised through government-guaranteed borrowings.

According to the implementation schedule, 87 km of metro lines and 56 stations are targeted for completion during the current year, while 302 km of corridors and 161 stations are planned to become operational. The meeting reviewed the proposed Metro Line-10 connecting Mira Gaon and Gaimukh in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, a nine point six eight km elevated corridor with five stations that is in the final stages of statutory approvals and is estimated to cost Rs 85 billion. Fadnavis directed officials to complete the project within three years.

The government also reviewed progress on several other proposed projects across the Mumbai region, Pune and Nagpur, including extensions and new corridors such as Metro Line-3, Line-11, Line-8 and Line-13. It discussed Metro Line-14, Line-12A, Pune Metro Phase-III and the Navi Mumbai and Nagpur Phase-II extensions. Officials were urged to accelerate approvals and land acquisition to meet the revised timelines.
