Meerut Metro Becomes India's Fastest Metro System

The Meerut Metro corridor, developed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), covers 23 km with 16 km of elevated alignment and seven km of underground track. The authority said metro services would run on the same infrastructure as the semi-high-speed Namo Bharat trains to permit swift interchange between services and to maintain passenger comfort. The corridor is intended to enhance urban mobility within Meerut and to integrate with existing rapid transit networks and support future network expansion.

The scheme comprises 13 stations along the 23 km corridor, including nine elevated stations, three underground stations and one at grade depot. Four stations, namely Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram, will serve both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro services to facilitate cross-platform transfers. Station designs will include lifts capable of accommodating medical stretchers and wheelchair access to ensure universal accessibility and to harmonise schedules with other services.

Trains will operate as three-car trainsets with transverse and longitudinal seating arranged for comfort and with a seating capacity of 173 and standing room for more than 700 passengers. Coaches will be air conditioned and fitted with luggage racks, grab handles, CCTV cameras, USB charging points and dynamic route maps to improve passenger convenience. Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) are planned for installation at all stations to synchronise with train operations and assist crowd management and prioritise passenger flow during peak periods.

The safety measures will include passenger emergency communication systems, fire extinguishers, alarms and talk-back systems to support quick response in emergencies. Selective door opening via push buttons is intended to reduce energy consumption while reserved seating will be designated for women and senior citizens. The operator also aims to provide seamless interchanges between rapid services and the new metro to accelerate regional connectivity and commuter convenience and to maintain operational resilience.
