The steel framework for Mumbai Metro Line 4 includes four massive girders standing 14 metres tall and weighing 325 tonnes. On Friday night, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) successfully placed a 48-metre-long steel span at Kapurbawadi Junction, connecting Wadala and Kasarvadavli.

Officials reported that the critical section was installed over the busy Ghodbunder Road within two nights, with no disruption to traffic. Positioned at the corridor’s elevated section, the structure was designed to bridge a complex intersection surrounded by existing flyovers. To ensure minimal disturbance, contractors employed 700-tonne and 550-tonne cranes, supported by backup cranes, trailers, and a safety team of over 100 engineers and labourers.

The authorities credited the smooth execution of this high-precision operation to effective collaboration between multiple government departments. An MMRDA official stated, “We appreciate the invaluable guidance and support from various government agencies, which was crucial for the successful and safe completion of this demanding project.” With this installation, all special steel spans from Majiwada to Kasarvadavli are now complete.

Metro Line 4, extending 32.32 kilometres with 32 stations, aims to improve east-west connectivity across Mumbai. The line links Wadala in the city’s southern-central area with Kasarvadavli in Thane, passing through key hubs such as Chembur, Ghatkopar, Mulund, and Thane.

The MMRDA announced that 84.5 per cent of construction on this line has been completed. The installation of this steel span keeps the project on track for Phase 1 commissioning, which will significantly reduce travel time between the eastern suburbs and Thane.
