The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) recorded significant progress across urban transport, sanitation, housing and livelihoods during 2025, reinforcing its focus on sustainable and inclusive urban development.

India’s operational metro network crossed the landmark 1,000 km milestone, reaching 1,090 km, with metro services expanding from 23 to 26 cities. During the year, metro projects worth Rs 259.32 billion covering 84.57 km were sanctioned, while around 85.62 km of new lines became operational. Key milestones included the inauguration of priority corridors of Bhopal, Indore and Bengaluru metro projects.

Urban mobility initiatives were strengthened with the launch of the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme logo and website by Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal at the Urban Mobility India Conference 2025. During the year, 3,622 e-buses were sanctioned along with Rs 607 million for associated infrastructure, including depots and power systems.

Under sanitation and environmental initiatives, more than 18 crore citizens participated in Swachhata Hi Seva 2025. The Dumpsite Remediation Accelerator Programme was launched to fast-track clearance of legacy waste and achieve the goal of zero dumpsites by 2026.

Housing and livelihoods also remained a focus area. Under PMAY-Urban, over 12.2 million houses have been sanctioned, while the PM SVANidhi scheme benefitted more than 7 million street vendors through over one crore loans. The scheme was extended up to March 31, 2030, further strengthening financial inclusion.

Water and sewerage infrastructure saw major progress under AMRUT and AMRUT 2.0, with 3.3 million water tap connections and 20 lakh sewer connections provided or serviced, alongside large-scale reuse of treated water.

Collectively, the milestones achieved in 2025 highlight MoHUA’s integrated approach towards urban mobility, clean cities, affordable housing and inclusive growth, aligned with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
