The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) has joined forces with Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt Ltd to establish battery swapping stations at 31 key Metro and Monorail stations across Mumbai.

Launched ahead of World Environment Day, the initiative aims to benefit electric vehicle (EV) users, particularly those relying on two- and three-wheelers for daily commuting and delivery services.

Honda’s ‘E:swap technology’ will be installed at 25 Metro stations along Lines 2A (Yellow Line) and 7 (Red Line), as well as six Monorail stations. These facilities will allow EV owners to exchange depleted Honda Mobile Power Packs for fully charged batteries in under two minutes.

This instant swapping service eliminates lengthy charging waits, easing range anxiety and making EV use more practical in the city’s dense urban environment. It is particularly valuable for delivery personnel, fleet operators, and frequent riders of electric two-wheelers.

“Instead of searching for charging points or waiting hours, users can simply visit designated Metro or Monorail stations to swap batteries swiftly and continue their journey uninterrupted,” said an official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Among the Metro stations equipped with swap centres are Gundavali, Andheri West, Malad West, Dahisar East, and Goregaon East, while Monorail stations such as Chembur, Wadala, Naigaon, and Mint Colony will also feature the service.

The battery swapping facilities will cater to Honda-compatible electric two- and three-wheelers, complying with all technical, safety, and environmental standards.

Officials highlighted that the project promotes eco-friendly commuting and adds economic value for the transit authority. MMMOCL expects to generate approximately Rs 3 million in non-fare revenue through this collaboration, bolstering the financial sustainability of Mumbai’s mass transit system.

This initiative is part of MMMOCL’s broader Electric Vehicle Policy, approved under the leadership of Metropolitan Commissioner and MMMOCL Chairman Dr Sanjay Mukherjee during the corporation’s 29th board meeting.

Dr Mukherjee stated, “Our partnership with Honda is a vital step towards creating a sustainable, low-emission urban environment. By enabling rapid battery swapping at Metro and Monorail stations, we are laying the groundwork for future-ready urban transport.”

The policy focuses on developing integrated, future-capable urban mobility solutions by involving the private sector in green infrastructure projects. With the first battery swap station operational at Dahisar East, the network will expand rapidly, positioning Mumbai as one of India’s pioneering cities to integrate battery swapping with public electric transport infrastructure.
