Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated blended hospitality services at Guwahati Railway Station and flagged off a new passenger train between Sairang and Silchar, emphasising renewed momentum for development in the Northeast. The event was attended by senior leaders including the Chief Minister of Mizoram and members of Parliament, and it was conducted through video conferencing. The minister said the measures aim to strengthen regional integration and improve accessibility for students, daily commuters, and patients.

The Sairang–Silchar service will directly connect Mizoram's capital with Assam's Barak Valley and is expected to enhance mobility across southern Assam and neighbouring states. New passenger facilities at Guwahati station comprise sleeping pods, an air-conditioned lounge, and multi-cuisine restaurants, which are intended to provide safer and more comfortable environments for travellers. The facilities are designed to improve overall station usability and to offer hygienic and restful spaces for passengers.

The minister highlighted an increase in rail funding for the region, noting a record allocation of Rs 114.86 billion (bn) in the Union Budget 2026–27 for the northeastern states and projects worth around Rs 724.68 billion (bn) that are already underway. He described the investment as part of a sustained push to enhance connectivity, facilitate the movement of goods, and open markets for local products.

Reference was made to the completion of the Bairabi–Sairang broad-gauge line, a technically challenging project that linked Mizoram's capital to the national rail network and was inaugurated by the prime minister. The link spans 51 km and its commissioning brought the state capital onto the railway map for the first time, with further enhancements planned through additional train services. Officials indicated that extending passenger services up to Silchar will consolidate these gains and support economic activity in the region.

Regional leaders expressed gratitude for the new services and highlighted the long-term benefits of improved rail infrastructure for trade and mobility. Observers noted that the transformation of the Northeast's railway map over the past decade has turned long pending projects into operational links, fostering steady progress across state capitals.
