NFR and IIT Guwahati Create Paint System to Combat Moss on Bridges

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, has developed a specialised paint system to prevent moss scaling on railway bridges. This innovation is aimed at improving structural durability, lowering maintenance costs, and enhancing railway safety in humid and rain-prone regions.
The new paint addresses the recurring problem of moss and biofilm formation on bridge surfaces, a major challenge in the northeastern climate. These biological layers contribute to corrosion and degrade the structural integrity of bridges over time.
According to NFR, the paint system includes an advanced chemical formulation with functionalised coatings and exterior lamination that actively resists moss growth and corrosion. This solution not only protects the visual appeal of bridges but also contributes to sustainable railway operations by reducing the frequency and cost of maintenance.
The development is expected to set a benchmark for future technology partnerships focused on modernising railway infrastructure in the region. It is also anticipated to support long-term safety goals for India’s railway network by mitigating environmental wear and tear.
