The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has initiated the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for expanding India’s bullet train network beyond the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route. NHSRCL, a joint venture between the Government of India and state governments, is the key implementation agency for high-speed rail (HSR) projects.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that efforts are being made to meet growing travel demand between key commercial and tourist hubs by expanding HSR beyond the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor.

“DPRs are being prepared to expand the HSR network across the country, focusing on cities with economic and tourist importance,” Vaishnaw noted.

He added that new HSR corridors depend on multiple factors like technical feasibility, financial viability, passenger demand, and funding availability. The existing MAHSR project benefits from technical support and financial aid from Japan.

Future bullet train corridors proposed under the National Rail Plan include Delhi–Varanasi, Delhi–Ahmedabad, Mumbai–Nagpur, Mumbai–Hyderabad, Chennai–Mysore, Delhi–Amritsar, and Varanasi–Howrah.

The entire MAHSR corridor is expected to be completed by December 2029, with the Gujarat stretch from Vapi to Sabarmati due by December 2027.
