Odisha Advances Key Rail Projects for Growth

In a high-level review chaired by Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary Smt. Anu Garg, senior officials from the Commerce & Transport Department, East Coast Railway, Forest Department, and Tourism Department assessed progress on major rail projects and resolved bottlenecks.
A flagship initiative is the Rs 4.92 billion Puri–Konark rail line, a 32 km corridor connecting the iconic Jagannath and Sun Temples. Featuring four stations and infrastructure for special events, the project is expected to generate 1.1 million man-days and stimulate local economies through the One Station One Product scheme.
In Mayurbhanj, three new lines—Bangriposi–Gorumahisani, Badampahar–Kendujhargarh, and Buramara–Chakulia—will link North Odisha to the western region. The Jaleswar–Chandaneswar route is designed to boost coastal tourism. The KBK region will gain from Gunupur–Therubali, Junagarh–Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri–Pandurangapuram lines, improving connectivity to Raipur, Vijayawada, and Hyderabad, while supporting agro-industries and tribal eco-tourism.
Other strategic projects include Khurda Road–Balangir and Bargarh Road–Nawapara Road lines, aimed at enhancing market access for rice-producing zones and reducing coal logistics costs and pollution.
Officials highlighted the need for timely land acquisition, sustainable planning, and the integration of tourism with logistics. Odisha’s proactive approach positions it as a key player in India’s rail infrastructure expansion and economic development.
