Panvel-Karjat suburban corridor nears completion by Dec 2025

The completion of the double line project, aimed at establishing a new suburban corridor in the Mumbai region between Panvel and Karjat, is projected to be achieved by December 2025. Currently, the on-going construction activities on this corridor, managed by MRVC and reaching 46% completion, were inspected by Roop Narayan Sunkar, a railway board member overseeing infrastructure.

With a sanctioned budget of Rs 8.12 billion, the project encompasses the construction of three tunnels and two rail flyovers. Land acquisition for the project has extended to over 57 hectares of private land and 4.4 hectares of government land. Additionally, the project involves forest land, for which permission was granted by the chief conservator for forest in Thane in August 2022. Work has already commenced in the forested area. The inspections were conducted in collaboration with MRVC Chairman and Managing Director, Subhash Chand Gupta.

MRVC has initiated construction activities for station buildings at Panvel, Chikhale, Mohape, Chowk, and Karjat stations, along with railway flyovers in Panvel and Karjat, and the development of three tunnels, according to an MRVC official. The new corridor is set to connect Navi Mumbai with the Raigad district of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, serving as a catalyst for the development of Panvel, Karjat, and the proposed Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area. Furthermore, it will facilitate the operation of local trains between Mumbai and Karjat via Panvel.
