Patna to Get Rs 950 Mn World-Class Rail Terminal in 18 Months
Patna, the capital of Bihar, is set to receive a world-class railway terminal modeled after Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The new terminal is being developed on 4.80 acre of land at an estimated cost of Rs 950 million. It is aimed at significantly enhancing the passenger experience through modern amenities, improved connectivity, and reduced congestion at the existing Patna Junction.
The foundation stone for the project was laid virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day visit to Bihar. While addressing a gathering in Bikramganj, where he inaugurated multiple development initiatives, the Prime Minister also launched the construction of the terminal. State officials and railway authorities were present during the event.
Key Highlights of the New Patna Railway Terminal:
1. Strategic Location and Layout
The terminal is being constructed just west of the existing Patna Junction, in front of Hardinge Park (Veer Kunwar Singh Park). Spread across 4.80 acres, it is designed to decongest Patna Junction and provide a seamless and contemporary commuting experience.
2. Rs 950 Million Investment
The total budget of Rs 950 million encompasses infrastructure development, terminal construction, enhanced connectivity, and the installation of passenger-centric amenities.
3. Project Timeline
Railway authorities have set an 18-month deadline for project completion. Sources have indicated that construction work is progressing steadily, and a 3D model of the terminal is expected to be unveiled by June 15, 2025.
4. Platform and Train Handling Capacity
The terminal will house five platforms and is projected to manage around 85 passenger trains daily. This development is expected to benefit over 100,000 daily commuters while easing the load on Patna Junction.
Operational Impact and Train Connectivity
Upon becoming operational, the terminal will support the operation of more than 85 MEMU and local passenger trains. These services will primarily link towns and cities in northern and central Bihar. Key train routes are expected to be shifted to this terminal to improve overall operational efficiency and commuter convenience.
