The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has approved the dismantling and reconstruction of the old railway overbridge (ROB) near Chinchwad railway station, following expert audit reports and consent from Indian Railways. The move addresses a long-standing public demand for safer and improved connectivity in the region.

The original left-side ROB, built in 1976 along the Mumbai–Pune Highway via Mahavir Chowk, has outlived its service life and was found structurally unsound. Although the parallel right-side ROB, constructed in 2004, remains operational, the older structure had already been restricted to two-wheelers and light vehicles. Heavy vehicles and buses had been rerouted, leading to public inconvenience and increased travel times.

In response, PCMC undertook multiple technical assessments. A 2021 audit by a private consultant and a 2022 review by Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering both recommended the demolition of the old bridge. Public feedback also played a key role, with residents and local representatives highlighting disrupted traffic flow and calling for a new, modern bridge.

With the Railways granting formal approvals in October and December 2024, PCMC has now moved ahead with the project. Commissioner Shekhar Singh stated, “The safety of our citizens is paramount. After five decades of service, it is time to replace the old Chinchwad ROB with a safer and more efficient structure.”

Additional Commissioner Vijayakumar Khorate added, “This project reflects the will of Chinchwad’s citizens. We are committed to working closely with the Railways to deliver the new bridge with minimal disruption.”

PCMC Chief Engineer Pramod Ombhase noted that a project management consultant has been appointed and that coordination with Railways is underway to ensure timely construction. He reiterated that the new bridge will not only improve safety but also reinstate convenient, direct access for thousands of daily commuters.

Once completed, the new ROB is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility in the Chinchwad area, reinforcing the city’s infrastructure resilience and commuter convenience.
