Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on Friday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the state’s first railway station at Sairang on 13 September. The announcement was made during the 15th Conference of the Mizoram Police Service Association in Aizawl.

Sairang Railway Station will serve as the terminus of the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang broad-gauge line, a project that began in 2008-09 and has been declared a National Project. Featuring 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and the tallest railway pier in India at 104 metres, the line is considered a significant engineering achievement.

The project has already cleared trial runs conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, with passenger services expected to commence this September. Officials highlighted that the new connectivity will reduce transport costs, ease passenger movement, and provide a major boost to Mizoram’s economy, agriculture, and tourism. Plans are also underway to develop Sairang into a world-class station with modern facilities and extend long-distance services, including Rajdhani Express routes.

Chief Engineer of the project, Vinod Kumar, explained that the prolonged monsoon season, frequent landslides, and reliance on a migrant labour force posed major challenges during construction. However, the line has been designed to withstand monsoon conditions, with bridges built to last over a century.

Kumar added: “PM Modi laid the foundation stone in 2014, and we are pleased that it is being completed during his tenure. This is one of the government’s key achievements in 11 years.”

Despite the geographical challenges, the successful completion of the Bairabi–Sairang line connects Mizoram’s capital Aizawl with India’s wider railway network via Silchar. The project stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and connectivity across the North East.
