Pune Metro is expediting work on the Phase One extension from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi, aiming to complete the 4.4 km elevated corridor six months ahead of schedule. The extension will add new stations at Chinchwad, Akurdi and Nigdi. Although the foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2024, construction began in August that year.
Executive Director Hemant Sonawane confirmed that the civil work is progressing rapidly, with a revised completion target of 30 months instead of the original 36. Administrative procedures for escalators, lifts and overhead cables have already been finalised to avoid delays.
The Rs 1,048.22 crore project will cover station infrastructure, intermodal integration, pedestrian bridges, environmental measures, depots and parking facilities. At present, the 17.4 km Swargate–PCMC line is operational, while the 5.5 km underground Swargate–Katraj section is planned for 2029. The Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor of 15.7 km is already functional. Approved extensions to Chandani Chowk and Wagholi, spanning 12.75 km with 13 stations, are expected to finish within four years at a cost of Rs 3,636.24 crore.
