Quadruple Railway Line Proposed Between Karjat and Panvel

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has proposed a Rs 4.92 billion project to construct a quadruple railway line between Karjat and Panvel to reduce congestion on Mumbai’s suburban rail network. This development aims to improve travel for thousands of commuters in Navi Mumbai and Raigad, two rapidly growing regions.

Currently, the Karjat-Panvel section operates with a single up and down line, resulting in frequent delays and overcrowding, especially during peak hours. The plan will add two new tracks to the existing pair, creating four lines. This will allow simultaneous operation of suburban locals and long-distance trains, enhancing punctuality and reducing congestion.

The new lines will improve connectivity to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and benefit areas such as Uran, Navi Mumbai, and nearby industrial zones.

Though the alignment covers only 39 kilometres, it passes through dense green areas requiring careful environmental assessment to minimise ecological impact. The project will also free capacity for cargo trains, improving freight movement.

The blueprint is under advanced consideration by central and state authorities, with fast-tracked budget approvals, permissions, and tenders to ensure timely completion. This quadruple line forms a key part of Mumbai’s plan to strengthen suburban rail and reduce dependence on road travel.

Upon completion, the project will reduce travel time and improve safety and comfort for millions of daily passengers, delivering a more efficient and sustainable transport system for the growing city.
