In a significant milestone the Food Corporation of India (FCI) food grain cargo train reached Sairang Railway Station on 3 March 2026 carrying 25,900 quintals of rice from Punjab and marking a new phase in the state's supply chain. The 42-wagon rake and its unloading demonstrated the growing operational capability of Sairang as a freight terminal. The movement underlined the contribution of rail connectivity to logistics and distribution of essential commodities in Mizoram.

The 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line, inaugurated on 13 September 2025 by the Prime Minister, brought Aizawl onto India's railway map by linking the state to the national network. The rail link is expected to create opportunities for economic growth and to promote tourism across the region.

The first freight rake comprising 21 cement wagons moved to Sairang shortly after inauguration, signalling the start of regular freight services. From April 2025 to March 2026 Sairang Terminal handled more than 30 freight rakes and three point five rakes of cement were unloaded during this period. Other consignments included automobiles in two rakes, fertilizers equivalent to zero point five rake, stone chips totalling 20.5 rakes and four rakes of sand, illustrating the terminal's growing utilisation.

Tourism has gained momentum with the Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train arriving at Sairang on 12 February 2026 carrying 81 tourists from India and abroad including the United States and Nepal. Passenger services have seen strong demand, with the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express recording occupancy above 150 per cent and other long distance services over 100 per cent. New regional connections such as the Sairang-Silchar service flagged off on 9 February 2026 are enhancing mobility and access to facilities in the Barak Valley. The rail expansion is poised to accelerate economic activity and to position Mizoram as a more accessible destination.
