The Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS), Janak Kumar Garg, is scheduled to carry out a statutory inspection and speed test of the newly constructed Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) stretch between Velachery and St Thomas Mount on Thursday. The visit is expected to precede decisions on commissioning and commercial operations for the route that is intended to strengthen public transport links in the city. Officials indicated that Mr Garg is likely to hold meetings with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) representatives during the visit to finalise operational details.

The CCRS, who previously served as the Commissioner of Metro Railways Safety (CMRS), will meet CMRL officials after completing the inspection to discuss final technical and service readiness matters. CMRL has completed preparatory works and has expedited the construction of 26 deck slabs to meet anticipated timelines. Sources within the agency said the organisation is awaiting formal approval from the Railway Board to commence commercial services.

The plan foresees Metro services commencing in phase II from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani via Porur once the Railway Board conveys its authorisation. Under the authorisation granted by the CMRS, the Metro will operate at a 15-minute interval between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction and at a 20-minute interval between Porur Junction and Vadapalani. The schedule is intended to be a temporary arrangement for an initial period of one month, after which service frequency will be reviewed and increased.

Officials suggested that the introduction of the service along this corridor is expected to offer greater connectivity for commuters and to relieve pressure on surface traffic in adjoining neighbourhoods. Safety certification and successful speed testing remain critical prerequisites before commercial operations can begin, and the inspection visit is designed to validate those conditions. Authorities said operational staff and systems have been prepared to align with regulatory requirements once approvals are in place.
