Indian Railways has approved Rs. 166.5 mn for the construction of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Alkapuri in Vadodara Division of Western Railway. The project will be implemented jointly by Indian Railways and the Gujarat State Government under a 50:50 cost-sharing arrangement, with each side contributing approximately Rs. 832.8 mn.

The proposed ROB is intended to address limitations affecting the existing Alkapuri Road Under Bridge (RUB) near Vadodara Railway Station. The RUB provides an east-west connection between Alkapuri and Kalaghoda, but its approximately 3-metre vertical clearance restricts the movement of larger vehicles.

The existing underpass also faces waterlogging during the monsoon, creating additional constraints for road users. The new grade-separated facility is expected to augment road capacity and provide a more effective crossing arrangement without disrupting railway operations.

The project will improve access to several important transport facilities in the area, including Vadodara Railway Station, the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation bus station and the upcoming High-Speed Rail station. The improved connection is also expected to support movement between major urban and transport nodes in the city.

A traffic assessment cited by the Ministry of Railways found that the corridor handles peak-hour traffic of more than 1,600 passenger car units (PCU) per hour. It also identified multiple traffic conflict points and inadequate pedestrian facilities. The four-lane ROB is therefore intended to address the capacity constraints of the existing RUB while improving road connectivity and safety around the railway station area.
