The proposal by the state government to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the extension of Bengaluru's yet-to-start suburban rail network to Mysuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru, and nearby towns is likely to face obstacles. This is because top railway officials are asserting that there is no justification for undertaking such a study.
The matter became a focal point in discussions related to mobility when Infrastructure Minister MB Patil proposed that K-Ride (Rail Infrastructure Development Company-Karnataka) should expand the suburban rail network to towns surrounding the tech capital to enhance connectivity. However, in response to K-Ride, the South Western Railway (SWR) stated that Indian Railways has already undertaken sufficient planning to meet future demand, and there is no need to reevaluate the situation.
