Russian Guarantee Clears Path for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains

The Vande Bharat sleeper trains project gains momentum as Russian rolling-stock leader TMH deposits Rs 2 billion in performance bank guarantee (PBG), signalling a significant step forward. This move opens the door for a manufacturing cum maintenance agreement between the Indian Railways and TMH, the chosen technology partner for producing 120 such revolutionary trains.

With eyes on the Lok Sabha elections, the government aims to unveil the inaugural prototype of the Vande Bharat sleeper train by March next year.

TMH, in collaboration with Indian railway PSU RVNL, forms the backbone of this endeavour. Simultaneously, a consortium involving Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) and Titagarh Wagons (TWL) secured the manufacturing tender for 80 Vande Bharat trains, positioning itself to likely produce the debut unit.

Designed for long-distance and overnight journeys, these trains have the potential to revolutionise rail travel, particularly on Rajdhani routes. The TMH-RVNL joint venture's special purpose vehicle (SPV) will manufacture 120 Vande Bharat sleeper train sets within the stipulated timeline and manage maintenance services for 35 years.

Currently, the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai is producing Vande Bharat trains featuring seating facilities. This latest development showcases India's commitment to modernising rail infrastructure and enhancing passenger comfort on extended rail trips.
