In a significant development for Kolkata’s commuters, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has completed the survey for a 1.6-kilometre extension of the Purple Line from Esplanade to Eden Gardens. This extension, following clearance from the Raj Bhavan, marks a crucial step in expanding the city’s metro connectivity.

The proposed route will pass along the edge of the Raj Bhavan lawns before reaching the planned fifth underground station at Eden Gardens. Though Governor’s approval is not usually required, it was sought in this instance due to the sensitive nature of the location.

An RVNL engineer explained that the survey assessed terrain, soil quality, and feasibility—key factors in determining alignment, construction methods, and costs.

Currently, the Purple Line spans 14.4 kilometres from Joka to Esplanade. The new extension will stretch the corridor to 16 kilometres, enhancing access to Eden Gardens and central Kolkata.

With this addition, the total number of stations will increase to 13—eight elevated and five underground. The underground portion of the route will expand from the current 5 kilometres to 6.6 kilometres.

The new Eden Gardens station will provide seamless connectivity to Kolkata Metro’s Blue Line (North-South) and Green Line (East-West), benefiting thousands of daily commuters working around BBD Bag, Strand Road, Babughat, and the Calcutta High Court. It will also improve access for sports fans visiting the stadiums in the area.
