The Ministry of Railways has officially declared the doubling of the 21-km Sabarmati D Cabin–Sarkhej section, under the Bhavnagar Division of Western Railway, as a “Special Railway Project”. The move grants the Central Government enhanced powers to expedite land acquisition and push forward critical infrastructure works in Gujarat.
The project, located within Ahmedabad city limits, involves laying a second railway line parallel to the existing track. By notifying it as a Special Railway Project, the government aims to streamline the land acquisition process, eliminate legal bottlenecks, and ensure timely implementation. This classification reflects the project's national significance and public utility.
As per the current year’s Railway Budget, an allocation of Rs 3.13 billion has been made for the initiative. The Sabarmati–Sarkhej stretch is vital for managing the movement of both passenger and freight trains, serving as a key link within the Western Railway zone.
Doubling the section is expected to decongest existing lines, improve operational efficiency, and expand the network’s capacity. Once completed, the enhanced corridor will strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and other regions of Gujarat, supporting quicker and more reliable rail services for both commuters and logistics operators.
