South Western Railway (SWR) has formally notified the Whitefield-Bangarpet quadrupling project on five March as part of efforts to ease congestion on the Bengaluru suburban corridor. The notification marks a procedural milestone for a scheme intended to augment line capacity by adding four tracks alongside upgrades to signalling and related infrastructure. SWR indicated that the move is aimed at addressing persistent bottlenecks affecting passenger and freight services.

The project scope includes track quadrupling, enhancement of station facilities and modernisation of signalling to permit higher throughput and more reliable scheduling. Works are expected to involve civil engineering, track laying, bridge modifications where required and installation of advanced interlocking systems. Authorities will coordinate with urban local bodies to manage construction impacts and to facilitate traffic management and temporary arrangements for commuters.

Officials anticipate that the quadrupling will reduce journey times and platform congestion while enabling the introduction of additional suburban services during peak hours. Freight operations stand to benefit from more predictable transit slots and reduced interference with passenger trains, which should support industrial and logistics activity in the region. The scheme is also expected to improve operational resilience on the corridor and to accommodate future demand from expanding residential and commercial centres.

Following notification, the railway will proceed with detailed project reports, land acquisition where necessary and tendering for engineering works, subject to statutory clearances. Coordination with state agencies will be necessary to address environmental and social safeguards and to ensure minimal disruption to passengers during execution. Timely implementation will depend on funding approvals and contractor mobilisation, and authorities have stressed that stakeholder engagement will remain a priority throughout the delivery phase.
