Telangana Seeks Fast-Track Approval for Hyderabad Metro Phase 2

A Revanth Reddy has written to Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy, seeking his intervention to accelerate the Central Government’s final approval for the long-pending Phase 2 of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. The move underscores the state government’s efforts to advance critical urban infrastructure in Hyderabad.

In his letter, Revanth Reddy noted that the Centre had already conveyed in-principle approval for the project through a communication dated 15 January 2026. The communication also proposed the formation of a joint committee comprising Central and state officials and requested Telangana to nominate two representatives. The committee is expected to oversee the transfer procedure related to Hyderabad Metro Phase 1 and facilitate progress on Phase 2.

The Chief Minister recalled his meetings with Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar on 18 November and 3 December 2025, during which both sides agreed that a joint committee would be the most effective mechanism to expedite the approval process for the metro expansion. Acting on this understanding, the Telangana government nominated the Principal Secretary (Finance) and the Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited as its representatives on 12 December 2025.

Revanth Reddy emphasised that the Telangana government has been in continuous coordination with the Centre on the project. He argued that early approval of Phase 2 is critical for strengthening Hyderabad’s urban transport infrastructure and supporting the state’s long-term economic growth. The Chief Minister urged Kishan Reddy to leverage his position in the Union Cabinet to ensure that formal approvals are issued without further delay.

The proposed Phase 2 expansion is expected to significantly enhance Hyderabad’s metro network, improve connectivity across key urban corridors and support sustainable urban development. The project is also seen as a catalyst for economic activity, real estate growth and improved mobility in the city.
