Tender issued for Mattancherry water metro terminal

The Action Council for the Mattancherry Water Metro Terminal, after a meeting with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on September 8, has welcomed this development. Arafath Nasar, the council's secretary, expressed satisfaction, stating that the Chief Minister had promised a prompt start to the project.

In 2019, Metro authorities had initially assigned a contractor for the terminal's construction, with a completion date set for March 2021. Unfortunately, the work failed to commence within the specified timeframe, leading to the contract's termination.

The construction of the Water Metro terminal holds the potential to invigorate tourism in Mattancherry, a prominent tourist destination. Visitors from around the world flock to Mattancherry to explore attractions such as the synagogue. Furthermore, there are calls for the creation of a corridor connecting the Water Metro stations in Mattancherry and Fort Kochi, enhancing the appeal for tourists and fostering development in both areas, according to K J Sohan, former mayor.

Meanwhile, the State Water Transport Department (SWTD) has yet to complete the renovation of its Mattancherry boat jetty, which has been inactive since the 2018 floods due to silt accumulation in the boat channels.
