Texmaco Rail Secures $135 mn Locomotive Export Order from South Africa

Texmaco Rail has secured a $135 mn export order from two South African entities for the design, manufacture, supply and commissioning of diesel-electric locomotives. The order was awarded by Tsiko Africa Logistics in collaboration with Barberry Holdings, according to exchange filings and information issued by the company’s board.

The contract covers Wabtec ES43ACi locomotives equipped with 4,500 horsepower diesel-electric propulsion systems. The vehicles will be supplied to support freight operations in South Africa, strengthening Texmaco Rail’s presence in the country’s rail equipment market.

The latest order follows a broader engagement between the companies. In May 2026, Texmaco Rail received a Letter of Award from a South African train operating company for more than 2,235 freight wagons across multiple variants and 30 diesel locomotives. The earlier contract was valued at more than Rs. 40.45 bn and included a proposed 15-year maintenance partnership.

Tsiko Africa Logistics and Barberry Holdings were established to provide rail freight capabilities for Tosaco Energy’s oil, gas and renewable energy projects and customers. Their activities are intended to provide an end-to-end logistics offering across the supply chain. Following the earlier award, Texmaco Rail was also reported to be planning a locomotive manufacturing facility in South Africa under a broader agreement valued at about $425 mn.

The proposed facility would support local manufacturing and South Africa’s rail infrastructure modernisation. Texmaco Rail said ongoing rail reforms, including the development of an open-access framework for rail freight, are expected to encourage investment in wagon supply, locomotive modernisation, maintenance contracts and wider rail infrastructure projects across Southern Africa.
