Western Railway has permanently expanded the 20901/20902 Vande Bharat Express by adding four additional air-conditioned chair car coaches, bringing the total to 16. The upgraded configuration came into effect on 11 May and significantly boosts capacity on the high-demand Mumbai–Gandhinagar corridor.

This expansion adds 312 seats per journey. With the train running six days a week in both directions, that equates to 936 extra seats daily and 5,616 weekly—benefiting around 22,500 more passengers each month.

The decision follows sustained demand from commuters, especially business travellers reliant on reliable and comfortable mobility between Maharashtra and Gujarat. This marks a wider push by Indian Railways towards efficient, sustainable infrastructure.

The Vande Bharat Express—India’s first domestically designed semi-high-speed train—epitomises the shift towards greener transport solutions. It features regenerative braking systems, onboard Wi-Fi, GPS-enabled passenger information, and bio-vacuum toilets, offering an eco-friendly and modern travel experience.

The upgrade supports India's net-zero ambitions and efforts to ease congestion in urban centres. Officials note it will also improve operational efficiency and long-term financial viability, particularly on high-traffic routes.

Passenger feedback has been positive, with commuters praising its punctuality and smooth ride. The expansion not only meets rising demand but reinforces Vande Bharat’s role in advancing clean, fast, and inclusive mobility across India.
