Western Railway plans to build two new platforms at Borivali station as part of an expansion of suburban rail capacity in Mumbai. The project also includes one new platform each at Andheri and Virar, with the combined infrastructure intended to support around 40 additional local train services towards Virar.

The proposed Borivali platforms will be around 330 m long and 7 m wide. The additional space is intended to improve train management and create capacity for more services on the Borivali-Virar section, one of the busiest stretches of the Western Railway suburban network.

The planned increase in services is expected to provide more travel options between Borivali, Virar and intermediate stations. It could also help distribute passenger loads across a larger number of trains, particularly during peak periods, when existing services and platforms face heavy demand.

Andheri, Borivali and Virar handle substantial daily passenger traffic. Andheri records 418,575 passengers a day, while Borivali handles 448,645 and Virar handles 581,198. The proposed platform additions at all three stations are aimed at strengthening capacity at key points on the suburban network.

For passengers, the main potential benefit will be more frequent local train services, particularly on the Borivali-Virar route. Additional platforms would give Western Railway greater flexibility in scheduling and managing trains without placing further pressure on existing platform infrastructure.

The expansion forms part of efforts to accommodate sustained passenger demand across Mumbai’s suburban railway system. Work at Borivali, Andheri and Virar is intended to support future service growth while improving the operational capacity of stations that serve some of the network’s largest passenger volumes.
