ABB has been selected by Cochin Shipyard to supply power and propulsion systems for two electric tugs, part of Phase 1 of India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), due for delivery to Polestar Maritime in 2027. The vessels will operate out of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s largest container port, supporting the transition from diesel-powered tugs to greener alternatives.

ABB’s scope includes electrical, propulsion, automation, and digitalisation systems. Its Onboard DC Grid™ and PEMS™ platforms optimise battery usage for varying power demands, enhance drivetrain efficiency, and extend operating range. The ABB Ability™ Remote Diagnostic System will enable condition monitoring and remote troubleshooting, ensuring reliable operations.
