The Union government has approved a Rs four point seven two billion (bn) project to construct a road over bridge and associated infrastructure at Tuna-Tekra to strengthen port connectivity and improve cargo evacuation. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said the approval is intended to enhance logistics efficiency and support the maritime sector under the leadership of the prime minister. The scheme encompasses viaducts, a bridge over a creek and allied infrastructure together with a ten-year maintenance provision to ensure durability and operational efficiency.

The proposed road over bridge is designed to serve as a critical connectivity link for the upcoming Tuna-Tekra port facilities, including a mega container terminal with a capacity of two point one nine million (mn) twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) and a multipurpose cargo berth capable of handling 18.33 million (mn) tonne (t) per annum. The ministry said this scale of handling is expected to reduce logistics turnaround time and ease congestion on existing routes. The development is intended to improve the overall efficiency of cargo movement in the region.

The ministry added that the project will be executed in tandem with the Tuna-Tekra Container Terminal, which has achieved around 45 per cent physical progress, and that synchronised development will ensure that connectivity infrastructure is ready alongside port operations. The road over bridge is expected to act as a primary transport artery to eliminate rail-road bottlenecks and to facilitate the movement of heavy-duty vehicles to and from the port. The proposal was earlier appraised by the delegated investment board under the ministry.

The project aligns with long-term maritime strategies, including Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which aim to position India as a global maritime hub. Officials indicated that the approved link will support increased trade flows and economic activity in the surrounding region. Implementation timelines and contracting details were said to be finalised in subsequent administrative procedures.
