China Launches World’s Largest 10,000-Tonne All-Electric Bulk Carrier
The carrier, equipped with high-capacity lithium iron phosphate batteries, can carry 10,000 tonnes of cargo on a single charge, achieving zero emissions during operations. Designed by Wuhan Changjiang Ship Design Institute, the ship integrates intelligent navigation and energy-management systems to optimise performance and battery life.
Gezhouba’s project forms part of China’s broader push towards clean energy and sustainable shipping. The vessel is expected to serve routes between Yichang and Shanghai, cutting nearly 3,900 tonnes of CO? annually compared to conventional fuel-powered ships.
With the successful launch, China strengthens its position as a global leader in green shipbuilding and maritime innovation.
