DMRC enters port sector with Kandla cargo automation deal

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has entered the port sector with the signing of an agreement to develop a real-time automated cargo evacuation system (e-FTS) at Kandla in Gujarat. The initiative marks DMRC’s diversification beyond metro operations into logistics and port infrastructure.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between DMRC, the Deendayal Port Authority, Umeandus Technology Private Limited, and Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML).

Under the agreement, the DMRC will oversee operations of the pilot project for 25 years during the operations and maintenance phase. The detailed scope of work for each participating agency will be defined later in a “Definitive Agreement”.

The e-FTS project aims to modernise cargo movement using automation and real-time monitoring, helping enhance efficiency, reduce operational costs, and support India’s push for smarter, more sustainable port logistics.
