DP World, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), and Nevomo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the deployment of Nevomo’s MagRail proprietary technology for the autonomous movement of rail-based cargo within existing port infrastructure. The agreement marks the start of a 750-metre pilot project at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat.

The project aims to demonstrate the use of self-propelled, electric-powered wagons using linear motor technology on conventional rail tracks. This will enable faster, more efficient, and cost-effective cargo movement for both containerised and bulk freight, while significantly reducing carbon emissions. The initiative is aligned with India’s National Logistics Policy and the PM Gati Shakti programme.

DP World, a global leader in smart supply chain solutions, is spearheading this innovative freight mobility project, while Deendayal Port Authority is facilitating its evaluation at one of India’s key multi-cargo ports.

The MoU was signed on 15 July 2025 in Kandla by Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of DPA; Rizwan Soomar, CEO & Managing Director for Middle East, North Africa, and the India Subcontinent at DP World; and Przemek (Ben) Paczek, CEO of Nevomo Group BV, in the presence of senior officials.

Commenting on the development, Singh said the partnership would enhance operational capacity and efficiency to meet rising cargo volumes. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, highlighted the company's commitment to adopting future-ready technologies to streamline supply chains, reduce transit times, and support India's trade ambitions.

Rizwan Soomar emphasised that the collaboration represented long-term, transformative thinking, aiming to advance India’s port-led logistics ecosystem and drive carbon neutrality through technology-driven solutions.

Paczek noted that MagRail would offer improved flexibility, reliability, and scalability in freight transport, making India’s logistics infrastructure greener and more competitive on a global scale.

The pilot project will also help reduce reliance on diesel-powered cargo vehicles, automate short-haul transfers, and improve yard efficiency, further reinforcing India's position as a leader in innovative and sustainable logistics.
