Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla, became the fastest among all Major Port Authorities in India to cross the 50 million metric tonnes (50 mn t) cargo handling mark during the 2026-27 financial year on July 16, 2026. The port achieved the milestone 19 days ahead of the corresponding period in the previous financial year, when it crossed the 50 mn t mark on August three, 2025.

The achievement reflects a sustained growth trajectory driven by enhanced operational efficiency, investment in world class infrastructure and improvements in logistics and connectivity. Port sources attributed the performance to streamlined berth operations, faster turnaround times and coordinated stakeholder engagement that reduced bottlenecks in cargo movement. Operational upgrades also included digitisation of procedures and enhanced cargo handling equipment that reduced dwell times.

The milestone further reinforced Deendayal Port Authority Kandla as India's number one major port and underscored its role in strengthening the maritime trade and logistics ecosystem. Analysts and traders noted that such early attainment of cargo targets supports export and import schedules and can improve supply chain predictability for the region. Market participants added that predictable berth availability and improved hinterland connections have supported trade flows into and out of western India.

Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, acknowledged the collective efforts of port users, exporters and importers, shipping lines, vessel agents, stevedores, customs house agents, terminal operators, trade associations, truck drivers, port officials, employees and shramiks in reaching the landmark. The authority said continued collaboration with trade partners and investment in operational enhancements would guide further capacity expansion. Officials affirmed plans to monitor throughput trends closely and calibrate investments according to demand. DPA signalled that it would sustain focus on efficiency, infrastructure and seamless logistics to support growing maritime trade.
