Garden Reach Shipbuilders (GRSE) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bharat Forge's arm, Kalyani Strategic Systems (Kalyani Strategic), to pursue collaborative work in defence and maritime innovation. The agreement encompasses joint development of indigenous technologies, design co?operation and possible co?production for naval platforms. The companies will focus on accelerating research and development and enhancing shipbuilding capabilities within India.

The pact will seek to integrate advanced manufacturing methods, systems integration and prototyping to support naval modernisation. It will also cover transfer of critical skills, supplier development and testing regimes intended to meet operational requirements. Officials indicated that the collaboration aims to shorten development cycles and reduce dependency on foreign sources.

The memorandum is expected to contribute to indigenisation of defence platforms and to support national initiatives on self?reliance in defence manufacturing. Industrial collaboration of this nature is likely to create opportunities for local suppliers and for workforce skill enhancement. Analysts noted that such partnerships could also open pathways for exports of finished platforms and subsystems in regional markets.

Both parties said they will establish joint working groups to define project road maps, timelines and resource commitments while adhering to regulatory frameworks. The companies intend to align research priorities with naval requirements and to pursue demonstrations and trials within the coming months. Observers expect the arrangement to reinforce the domestic shipbuilding ecosystem and to support broader strategic goals.
