Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a consortium that will submit a joint bid in response to the Shipbuilding Corporation of India (SCI) tender. The collaboration is intended to pursue a large-scale and strategically significant national shipbuilding programme designed to strengthen India's indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. The partners have framed the consortium to align with the terms and conditions specified in the tender and to coordinate delivery and execution.

The partnership envisages the construction of advanced maritime platforms and aims to contribute to the enhancement of the country's maritime infrastructure and long-term operational capabilities. It is expected to foster technological self-reliance by integrating design, production and systems engineering expertise from both shipyards. The consortium will seek to adopt collaborative approaches to complex shipbuilding programmes and to build capacity across the supply chain.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by GRSE's Director Shipbuilding, Commodore Shantanu Bose IN Retd, and HSL's Officiating Chairman and Managing Director, Captain Ganti Venkateswarlu IN Retd, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations. The partners indicated that the collaboration will leverage complementary strengths in construction and repair, project management and specialised engineering. The arrangement is positioned to reinforce the national vision of Atmanirbharta in shipbuilding and to support collaborative execution of complex projects.

GRSE is a defence public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence and HSL is a defence public sector undertaking with established expertise in shipbuilding and ship repair. The consortium is expected to enhance indigenous maritime capability and to provide a framework for sustained development of national shipyard capacity. Officials said the initiative will also aim to improve long-term readiness and operational self-sufficiency of maritime assets.
