The Indian Coast Guard commissioned the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Achal, the newest vessel in the Adamya-class fast patrol vessel series, at Goa Shipyard Limited on nine May 2026. Named Achal, meaning firm, the ship reflects the service's commitment to safeguarding national maritime interests and protecting life at sea. The vessel will expand the force's capacity to secure India's maritime frontiers and to support a wide spectrum of missions. The commissioning was presented as a key enhancement of operational capability.

The vessel was formally commissioned into service by A. Anbarasu, Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition) in the Ministry of Defence, in the presence of Inspector General Tekur Sashi Kumar, Commander of Coast Guard Region (North-West), senior central and state government officials, and representatives of Goa Shipyard Limited. The ceremony underscored close coordination between government agencies and indigenous industry partners. Officials highlighted the strategic importance of the timely induction of modern platforms for coastal defence. Attendees noted the contribution to regional maritime security architecture.

Designed and built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited, the ship represents a significant milestone in India's shipbuilding capability. It incorporates more than 50 per cent indigenous components, reinforcing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and aligning with the Government of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. The vessel's construction was presented as evidence of strengthening domestic industrial capacity for complex maritime platforms. The platform is expected to support further advances in local supply chains and technical expertise.

ICGS Achal will undertake coastal and offshore surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue operations, anti-smuggling missions, and marine pollution response, thereby enhancing operational readiness across multiple roles. Its induction forms part of the Indian Coast Guard's ongoing fleet expansion programme and will contribute to reinforcing coastal security. The addition is intended to improve response times and situational awareness in assigned maritime zones. The commissioning was recorded as a constructive step in modernising the service.
