SOPAN Group, in partnership with VOC Port Authority (VOCPA), has initiated construction of India’s first green methanol bunkering and refuelling terminal at Tuticorin. The pilot-scale project, inaugurated by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, marks a milestone in India’s efforts to decarbonise its maritime sector under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

The facility will include a 750 m³ storage and bunkering terminal built under a full EPC model by SOPAN. It is designed to support India’s net zero commitments and the Maritime India Vision 2030, promoting cleaner fuels and sustainable port development. Once operational, the hub is expected to reduce ship emissions by up to 95 per cent compared to conventional fuels.

VOCPA has already piloted a green hydrogen project and sees methanol as another critical step in its Green Port mission. According to SOPAN Director Aniruddha Kadvekar, the project is not only a first for India but also demonstrates the country’s Make in India capability in sustainable infrastructure. He added that the development positions India as a potential global leader in alternative marine fuels.
