The Indian Navy's oceanographic research vessel INS Sagardhwani arrived at Port Klang, Malaysia on 13 May 2026 as part of her South East Asia deployment. On arrival, the ship was welcomed by personnel of the Royal Malaysian Navy and received customary port call courtesies. The visit will extend for two days and will include a series of scheduled bilateral activities.

Personnel from the Indian Navy and the Royal Malaysian Navy will participate in collaborative engagements encompassing professional interactions, training exchanges, cross-deck visits and Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEE). These activities are designed to enhance bilateral maritime cooperation and to strengthen scientific collaboration between the two navies. The planned exchanges will focus on sharing oceanographic research practices, surveying techniques and operational procedures to improve interoperability. Emphasis will be placed on mutual understanding of maritime safety, environmental monitoring and regional security dynamics.

The port call marks INS Sagardhwani's return to Port Klang following her earlier scientific deployment in 2019 and underlines continuity in maritime research ties. The visit highlights a growing partnership that spans naval diplomacy, scientific cooperation and people to people contact. Officials expect the engagements to contribute to capacity building and to consolidate existing frameworks for joint activities.

The ship's programme also includes opportunities for cross cultural interaction and familiarisation with platform capabilities aimed at fostering practical cooperation at sea. The schedule includes technical briefings, visits to shore facilities and demonstrations of scientific equipment to deepen practical cooperation. The port call forms part of a broader Indian Navy outreach in the region intended to support collective maritime security and cooperative scientific endeavours. On completion of the visit, INS Sagardhwani will depart to continue her deployment in South East Asia.
