Kollam Port Secures Rs 72.4 Million for Berth Development

The central government has approved a Rs 72.4 million (mn) allocation for berth development at Kollam Port in Kerala. The funding will support construction and strengthening of berth infrastructure to improve vessel docking and turnaround. The move forms part of broader efforts to upgrade coastal ports to handle increased coastal and regional maritime traffic.

Port officials said the project aims to accelerate cargo handling capacity and streamline loading and unloading operations for coastal shipping services. The development will also provide better support for fishing vessels and local maritime services, improving operational safety and efficiency. Authorities will coordinate with state agencies to implement the works in phases without disrupting existing services.

Local businesses and logistics operators stand to benefit from reduced waiting times at berth and improved connectivity to hinterland markets. Enhanced berth infrastructure will lower transport costs and facilitate smoother movement of commodities, including bulk and containerised cargo. This investment will support expansion of shipping services and promote economic activity along the coastal corridor.

Funds will be channelled through the port authority to ensure coordinated implementation and accountability. Improved berth capacity will benefit small traders and fisherfolk by expanding access to regional markets and reducing turnaround times. Continued monitoring and timely execution will determine the full extent of benefits to the local economy. The allocation underscores a strategic emphasis on coastal infrastructure as an efficient transport corridor and complements wider initiatives to strengthen maritime logistics.
